More about VI — SIX OF TOOTSIE ROLLS (a field report from the edge of sweetness and suspicion)

Listen closely, because this one doesn’t sit still.

I pulled this card somewhere south of reason, on a road that smells like dust, sugar, and imported mistakes. The sky is honest, the ground is not, and everything in between is negotiating terms.

There’s an old man—creased like dry riverbeds—holding out a piece of something wrapped and foreign. Chocolate, they call it. A sweet lie from the north. A brown cylinder of quiet consequence. In his other hand, more of them. Inventory. Evidence. Or maybe just memory.

The girl stands there in red—pure signal, impossible to ignore. Her hand reaches, but not fully. Not yet. That’s the whole card right there: not yet.

Now here’s where it gets slippery.

Maybe he’s giving.
Maybe she’s giving.
Maybe this is a theft disguised as kindness or kindness disguised as theft.
Maybe neither of them knows which side they’re on.

And the dog—God help the dog—locked in a trance. Eyes fixed on the chocolate like it’s salvation. But we know better. That sweetness is poison to him. Absolute poison. The dog is the only honest creature here, because he wants what will harm him and doesn’t have the language to doubt it.

That’s the axis of the card:

Desire does not recognize danger.

In the background comes the mother—fast, tense, carrying the weight of every bad story she’s ever heard. To her, this is simple: an old man, a child, candy. The equation is already solved and it ends badly.

But she’s late to the moment.

Because this exchange—whatever it is—is already happening in a place she can’t measure. The old man sees his granddaughter in the girl. The girl sees… who knows? Maybe hunger, maybe curiosity, maybe nothing at all.

No one is lying.
No one is telling the truth either.

And overhead—six identical tokens. Counted. Ordered. Imported. The system says: this is value. The street below says: value depends on who’s watching.

This is globalization in its most ridiculous form: a cheap candy crossing borders, carrying with it an entire mythology nobody here fully understands. Some see a treat. Some see danger. Some see opportunity. Some see accusation.

Most don’t even know what it is.
