While affected by the beam, the rancher is completely insensible, unaware even of the passage of time, which is why he will believe he has experienced "missing time." The 'aliens' did this to the rancher so that he would know nothing about a cattle mutilation taking place barely 100 yards away. When he discovers the mutilated bull, he will be confused, wanting to believe that it happened while he was doing chores in the barn on an otherwise uneventful day - even though he is unable to shake the missing-time feeling.

The narrow beam shown here is allegedly the distinguishing feature of the alien mind-control technology, whereas the broad, diffused looking light seen on UFOs' undersides is reportedly used to teleport people and objects.
