Competitive sports are not normally a playing field for acidheads—with one exception. On June 12, 1970, pitcher Dock Ellis became a baseball legend as he won for the Pittsburgh Pirates against the San Diego Padres with a no-hitter while he was under the influence of LSD. It was an incredible achievement while in such a state, since a no-hitter signifies the special and extremely rare achievement of a pitcher not allowing a single base hit during an entire game. Ellis had swallowed a trip thinking he had that day free and the game would be played the following day. In an interview in 2008, he said “I can only remember bits and pieces from the game.... “I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria....The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large some-times, sometimes I saw the catcher, some-times I didn’t. Sometimes, I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me was holding a guitar and swinging it over the plate.” - Mystic chemist 263
