A Light in the Dark, and a Cat to Ponder Eating It

Is the cat a necessary evil? Do we need to believe there is a threat which might destroy the things we love and the things that give us hope? Would we grow complacent in the absence of this threat, becoming ignorant and vulnerable when a new threat rises?
These are silly questions. Cats can never be evil.
