The original image is a cropped print of the Sea Venture, a 300-ton vessel that was the flagship for a fleet of nine that carried 600 new migrants from Falmouth, England to the Jamestown colony in the summer of 1609. The fleet was dispersed by a hurricane and the Sea Venture was shipwrecked on the Bermudas shore with her 150 castaways. Her captain, Admiral George Somers (1554-1610), led the castaways to build two new boats from the remains of the Sea Venture and local cedar wood. They sailed again to Jamestown and reached that settlement in May, 1610, ten months later than the other ships.
