So, I wasn't as impressed as I might have been with the initial version of this, so I went back to the drawing board. As I suspected, refiltering the original image through two style filters (both of my own concotion again) at a much lower 'style density' had the desired effect: more of the original image was preserved while incorporating the weird elements of the filters.
