I started this sketch of a snake using just a #2 pencil. Because I arranged it vertically, it took on the look of striking from within, perhaps from its den or hiding place. I kept imagining the word "spring-loaded" as I completed more lines that took a life of their own. Only later did I start using colored markers which lent more depth and complexity making the picture more dynamic as it grew more strange and mysterious. The mountain and bursting themes emerged as I changed tack by using dots, thousands of different colored dots. The dots were the most satisfying and time-intensive.
