Named after Commodore William Bainbridge whose feats included fighting off Barbary Coast pirates around the time of the Barbary wars. The first few missions of DDG-96 sent her on anti-piracy ops off the Horn of African. She gained international acclaim for the rescue of Capt. Richard Philips of MV Maersk Alabama after an attempted hijacking by Somali pirates in 2009.
