More about Midnight in a primordial forest.

This is my photo from a trip to Alaska. It is Equisetum telmateia subsp. braunii, Northern giant horsetail. The style is by Hirō Isono (Japanese, 1945-2013).

Equisetum is a "living fossil", the only living genus of the entire subclass Equisetidae, which for over 100 million years was much more diverse and dominated the understory of late Paleozoic forests. These plants contain silica, aconitic acid, equisitine, starch, several fatty acids, and even some nicotine.
