The Sun Temple in Sogamoso was the most important temple in the religion of the Muisca people, indigenous to what we now call Bogotá, Colombia. The Muisca have a profound understanding and relationship with astronomy - this temple, like many others, was built to align with astronomical events. The openings on the sides of the temple serve as a calendar, and every year on the winter equinox, sunlight falls directly on the central pillar. This feat of craftsmanship was ruthlessly destroyed by fire by Spanish colonizers in their ultimately-fruitless search for gold, but has since been restored by a hardworking Colombian archaeologist named Eliécer Silva Celis.
