A sudden rain shower —
In the river by the gate
A golden carp leaps.
(Tsunoda Chikurei)

Shadows braid through trees —
Earth sighs beneath the rain’s weight,
Footsteps blur to streams.
Golden ripples rise,
A leap too swift to follow,
Light scatters to dusk.
Reeds hum their quiet song,
Clouds dissolve at the river’s bend,
Time fades like a dream.
Raindrops break the still —
Each one a pulse, then gone again,
The river holds its breath.
Stillness fills the gate,
The river speaks in murmurs,
And the carp slips through night.
