Associated with the wrong crowd. Never directly killed anyone. Not sure he wanted anyone killed either. A misidentified goofy small scale punk thief who hung out with the wrong crowd (Tex Watson, being the primary aggressor and motive in the murders) and acted and spoke with enough out of body experiences from psychedelics no one really knew what to make of him.
