passed every test designed by people who had never watched a machine fail with
teeth in it. Mara clamped the rotor into the fixture, dragged the model out of the air,
and told the room to show her the ugly numbers. Blue geometry snapped around the
metal. Stress paths flared amber. The bearing sang at twenty-three kilohertz, a thin
animal noise under the motor’s electric purr. Inner race, third quadrant, fourteen
microns out after heat soak. Enough to turn a prototype into shrapnel at eleven
thousand rpm. She grinned until her face hurt.

The workshop rose to meet her. A robot arm held the housing at the one angle no
human wrist could keep. The microscope threw the damage six feet high. Drawers
unlocked. The lathe accepted a revised cut before she finished swearing at the old
one. Behind glass, a printer began growing a new cage in nickel-titanium. No
request form. No ticket. No meeting about whether fourteen microns were “material

Mara watched the machine. Neither spoke because language had become the
slower tool.

The bearing did not sing. Mara planted both palms on the steel table and laughed
once, low and helpless, because the thing that had existed only behind her eyes was
now spinning under load, hot and real, and matter had failed to object. By sunrise
the prototype had stopped being an argument. It had become something the world
would have to survive.
