ABOUT THIS SPECIES : THE MUSCANS

This alien has mutualistic relationships with several of its Homeworld's insect species ; during First Contact, the human crew only saw the one species that looks something like a housefly, and so these humans named this alien species accordingly, i.e., houseflies' taxonomic name is musca domestica.

They were astonished to see the flies entering the Muscans' enormous ears to interface with the Muscans' nervous system.

The slim odds of such an evolutionary development has led some exo-biologists to speculate that this species was created by an earlier species, although to what end, none can say.
