Mental disorders can be monstrous for the one who suffers from them.
Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder. A person with agoraphobia is afraid to leave environments they know or consider to be safe. For someone with agoraphobia, being on the street can feel overwhelming and terrifying. They may experience intense anxiety, panic attacks, or a sense of being trapped with no way to escape. Even simple tasks like crossing the street or being in crowded places can trigger severe distress. This fear can lead to avoidance behavior, causing them to limit their time outside or avoid certain situations altogether. In severe cases, a person with agoraphobia considers their home to be the only safe environment. They may avoid leaving their home for days, months or even years.
The exact causes of agoraphobia are not fully understood, but they are thought to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Some possible causes include a history of trauma or stressful life events, a family history of anxiety disorders, changes in brain chemistry or functioning, and learned behavior patterns.
People with mental health disorders are often being told to “get over it” or to “toughen up.” This isn't an effective approach and it can make the situation much more traumatic and frustrating for someone with agoraphobia. Realise that mental disorders can be monstrous for the one who suffers from them.
