A Late Roman statue of the four tetrarchs that ruled the empire in the time of Diocletian, stolen from Constantinople by Venice in the Fourth Crusade in 1204 and installed in Venice. In the middle ages and Renaissance the secret of porphyry, a purple very hard marble, had been lost, and possessing it always meant a connection to fallen Rome. The style here is a Donatello bas relief, and it has transformed the porphyry to bronze.
