I have been in the medieval reenactor scene for many years. There it is a custom, actually a tradition, to greet each other with a friendly hug. No matter where you go (to a Medieval Fair), no matter whether you have known the people and friends for years or whether they are unknown, new faces, the first thing you do is hug and cuddle as a greeting. That's why you feel like a big family. Even when we did combat demonstrations, there was always a friendly hug afterwards to show the people and especially the children that even if we were dueling with swords, we are actually friends and love each other!
