Mixing of new wool & cotton in this mill are gone. The "shoddy" industry revolved around the recycling of old woolen items by mixing them with new wool and making them into heavy blankets and uniforms but there is a lot more to the story.....Several types of cloth can be woven from wool. "Woolens" were heavy felted cloths of the type used for coats and blankets. Besides woolen cloth, other goods, such as druggets, used as carpets, horse-rugs, floor-cloths, etc, were made of shoddy. Flushing may at one time may also have been synonymous with shoddy - as one definition of flushing describes it as "a course heavy woolen fabric" of the type used in military uniforms.
