Assuming you want to preserve the texture and pattern of your black and white image, you can transfer color from another image with the following technique. First transfer the style of the black and white image to another image that has the color you want, preserving its color. Then transfer that result back to your black and white image.
The first set of hues should probably be limited to a very few to avoid getting a random mess. Once you get some color in your image, then you can repeat the process to get more colors.
