Rocky did not get his name, as you might suppose, from the Beatles’ song “Rocky Raccoon.” Long before the pond was built, Rocky was already living in the backyard of the man who would become its proud owner. One day, he watched with considerable interest as part of the basement wall was removed so that an enormous television screen—far too large to fit through any ordinary doorway—could be installed.

After the television was in place, a small upper window remained. From a narrow ledge outside, Rocky could peer directly into the room below. Inspired by this cinematic obsession, Rocky, who had previously answered to another raccoon name, decided to adopt the title for himself.

Urban raccoons, despite their reputation as wandering bandits, tend to occupy relatively small territories. Major roads form natural boundaries they seldom cross. Rocky’s domain consisted of roughly five city blocks, and within this compact kingdom he knew every fence, tree, rooftop, and garbage can. Soon, an extraordinary opportunity would arise within his jurisdiction.

When the family decided to build a pond near the backyard fence, the homeowner created a beautiful waterfall beside a columnar juniper. They stocked the pond with twenty small koi carp, each worth fifty dollars. Within a week, every fish had been given a name. The great blue heron appears like a creature from another age. Watching a heron glide at sunset, one can understand the association. Its slow, majestic descent mirrors the sun itself sinking beneath the horizon.

When one of these elegant assassins spotted the bright flashes of orange in the pond, it descended and quickly removed several koi before the survivors fled to deeper water. Alarmed, the homeowner consulted the local garden center and was advised to place a decoy heron beside the pond. Because herons are fiercely territorial, the fake bird would discourage intruders—but only if it was moved every few days to maintain the illusion.
