The ruins of an ancient city called The BLACK CITY because it is made largely from black marble and other black stone AND overgrown with plants especially vines ; the city is dusty but the stonework is so hard that THERE IS NO BROKEN STONE ANYWHERE ; the scene is depicted in the characteristic style and bold palettes of IVAN BILIBIN, especially is illustrations of folklore stories.
The artist and explorer who gave this painting its title refused to say precisely what ruins the painting was depicting, then he died under mysterious circumstances before more information could be gotten from him. Some think he was depicting ruins of the Chachapoya, Chavin Culture or, as the title asserts, a completely unknown group. Others wonder if the site is even in the Andes : the artist is known for his cleverness, and such misdirection was second nature to him.
