The British Archaeologist Howard Carter was determined as ever after years of searching, but his wealthy financial backer, Lord Carnarvon, was losing his patience if the tomb was not found after one more season he told Carter that the funding would be revoked.

One day a little boy carrying water for Carters team accidently discovered a stone step beside the entrance to the vast empty tomb of Ramses VI.

Lord Carnarvon entered the tomb on 26 November "Feverishly we cleared away the remaining last scraps of rubbish until we had only the clean sealed doorway before us. We made a tiny breach in the top left-hand corner to see what was beyond." With the help of a candle, Carter peered through the hole he had made.

Lord Carnavon said to me: "Can you see anything?" I replied, "Yes, it is wonderful." I then with precaution made the hole sufficiently large for both of us to see. With the light of an electric torch as well as an additional candle we looked in. Our sensations and astonishment are difficult to describe as the... better .... light revealed to us the marvelous collection of treasures. Our sensations were bewildering and full of strange emotion"

What they were seeing were the fabulously rich contents of a royal tomb that had remained hidden for nearly 3,400 years. It was their glimpse of more than 5,500 items.
