I have always loved the cosy little towns and villages in the heartland of European countries, hidden from the eyes of tourists: with cobbled streets, stone and timber-framed houses, red geraniums in the windows, and walls entwined with ivy or wild vines. These places retain their tranquillity, time-honoured traditions and, quite often, medieval architecture, as well as welcoming residents and that warm, friendly atmosphere and charm that are hard to find in big cities.
