The Saban Building was constructed in 1939 and housed the May Company for decades. After some years of uncertainty regarding its future, it was preserved as the cornerstone of the new Academy Museum, which opened in September of 2021. (Fun fact: work on the building had to be halted briefly in 2019 when excavation for the underground parking structure revealed a treasure trove of fossils; the famed La Brea Tar Pits is less than half a mile away.) The cylinder itself is composed of 350,000 gold glass mosaic tiles, which inspired the gold-themed style choice.
