When I was a teenager in the early 70's there were two occurrences where I remember waking up finding myself standing in the corner of my bedroom, looking at myself still in bed. I could see many small sparkling coloured spots of light (orbs?) hovering by my bedside table, and there was a very high-pitched whistle. I tried to open the bedroom door to call for help, but my hand passed straight through the door handle. I mentioned all this to my doctor, and he mentioned the phenomenon of "sleep paralysis". Apparently the part of the brain responsible for awareness can wake up before the part responsible for muscular movement (it stops us moving about when we dream in REM state), and this can produce bizarre hallucinations, such as believing we are being abducted by aliens in UFO's, or leaving our bodies (Astral Projection). Some gurus claim to be able to master this at will (Sylvan Muldoon?) but this only happened to me on two occasions. Maybe something to do with teenage hormones?
