The original photo was taken yesterday in Holmes Educational State Forest, Henderson County, NC. The Trout Lily is a spring ephemeral meaning their flowers open up early in the spring, before the large oak trees leaf out blocking most of the sunlight at the forest floor. Most of the Trout Lily plant is below ground, usually part of a colony which can be up to 300 years old. These little spring flowers may be the oldest plants in the forest.
