The Russian Buran (Ъуран) space shuttle program was extremely short-lived, especially in comparison to the American program. It came during a period of turmoil in Russia, and without either excellent leadership or funding, it soon fizzled. The Buran missions were unmanned until its untimely demise, leaving uncompleted space shuttles rotting in hangars. It remains a truly fascinating story.
