The term “Japanese kirin” refers to a mythical creature known as a “qilin” in Chinese folklore. In both Chinese and Japanese cultures, the qilin or kirin is depicted as a mythical hooved creature with scales, resembling a deer or ox, and sometimes with a dragon-like head and a single horn. It symbolizes auspiciousness, prosperity, and serenity. Despite its Chinese origins, the concept of the qilin has been adopted and adapted in Japanese culture, where it is also referred to as “kirin.” It is often depicted in art and folklore as a benevolent creature that brings good fortune and blessings.
