Gotta love me some Clarence “Frogman” Henry. His music always makes me smile. The Beatles dug the Frogman and his joyous New Orleans vibe enough to have him open for them on 18 concerts of their 1964 US tour. This episode of Air-Conditioned spotlights a lot of Louisiana with artists like The Neville Brothers, Dave Bartholomew, Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, Bobby Charles and The Boswell Sisters, who were singing about “Rock and Roll” a good seventeen years before Alan Freed “coined” the term. Once we leave Louisiana, we make stops through Mississippi, Memphis, Chicago and wherever good R&B and Blues can be found. We go with James Brown to the Crossroads, listen to Little Milton school clueless men, experience illumination from transgendered R&B pioneer Jackie Shane, while LaVern Baker struts her stuff with Bessie Smith. J.B. Lenoir, Nina Simone, Cassandra Wilson and the North Mississippi Allstars round out the show with their own magic. A good time is guaranteed.

Just click on (or copy and paste) either of the links at the beginning or end of this post and it’ll take you to the Air-Conditioned webpage where the latest episode and a handful of recent episodes can be streamed anytime. Remember, this episode is available to hear at 9AM CST, Friday, July 8th. You don’t have to only check it out at the time it airs, if your schedule doesn’t permit. It’ll be available to hear for the following month. If you use this link before this show’s airing, you will get last week’s show, which was actually pretty good, too. As always, thanks for listening and the good feedback.
