John C. Calhoun of S. Carolina. 7th U.S. Vice President and one of the Senate’s most effective advocates and legislative defenders of slavery. Unlike many of his allies, he didn’t believe slavery was a “necessary evil” but a “positive good” that benefited both owners and slaves.
